What is a typical day at OAL like?
Every day is different, with a variety of samples arriving that could be as critical as fluids from a power station shutdown or essential oils from a food factory conveyor line. You’ll be at the forefront of ensuring these samples are processed swiftly and accurately. Every day is a little different, but one day you could be:
- Unpacking & Labelling: You’ll begin by unpacking the day's deliveries, ranging from oil to coolant samples. Each sample will be labelled and photographed for traceability, then logged into our Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), ensuring every step of the process is tracked.
- Microscopy & Magnetic Particle Check: Some samples will be further analysed under the microscope, where you’ll check for the presence of magnetic particulates, an indicator of potential wear or contamination. Your attention to detail is crucial at this stage, as even the smallest signs of debris can reveal larger issues.
- Subsampling & Preparation: Once logged and checked, you’ll subsample these fluids, scanning them into the LIMS using QR codes. The samples will then be mixed and homogenised, ensuring they are consistent before being prepared for a range of tests, from laboratory instruments to autosamplers.
- ICP Analysis: One of the more exciting tasks will involve heating the samples in our Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) equipment, reaching temperatures that rival twice the surface temperature of the sun! This step allows us to analyse the elemental composition of the sample, providing deep insights into its condition.
- Wet Chemical & Crackle Tests: You’ll perform wet chemical tests to detect specific contaminants and the crackle test to measure water content—crucial for determining if the sample has been compromised.
- Archiving: Once testing is complete, the samples are archived, ensuring they’re safely stored and traceable for future reference, should any reanalysis be required.
- Customer orders: for every bottle that comes in another goes out, so we also need to assemble and supply kits to our valued customers ready to take their next sample with us.
Each day in this high-throughput lab is dynamic, fast-paced, and full of learning opportunities, where you’ll play an essential role in keeping industries running smoothly.
