Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safe use and maintenance of all equipment used within Oil Analysis Laboratories. It aims to prevent accidents and injuries related to equipment use and to maintain the quality and reliability of our laboratory results.
Scope
This policy applies to all laboratory equipment used within Oil Analysis Laboratories, including but not limited to spectrometers, microscopes, robotics, centrifuges, and heating equipment.
Responsibilities
All employees, service engineers and contractors are responsible for adhering to this policy. Managers and supervisors have additional responsibilities for implementing this policy, providing appropriate training, and enforcing safe work practices.
Safe Use of Equipment
- All users must be properly trained on the use of each piece of equipment before they are allowed to operate it.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) must be worn as required when operating equipment. This includes as appropriate safety glasses, gloves, and lab clothing etc.
- Equipment must only be used for its intended purpose and in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Any malfunctions, unusual noises, or other abnormalities in equipment operation must be reported immediately to the lab manager.
Maintenance and Inspections
- All equipment must be maintained according to a scheduled maintenance program. This includes routine cleaning, quality control checks, and servicing to ensure safe use and accurate delivery of data.
- Equipment should be visually inspected before each use for any signs of damage or wear. Any issues should be reported to a supervisor immediately.
- Only trained and authorized personnel are permitted to perform maintenance or repairs on equipment.
Training
- Training will be provided for all new employees and when new equipment is introduced. Refresher training will also be provided periodically and as needed.
- Training will cover the correct operation of the equipment, potential hazards, required PPE, and emergency procedures.
- All new capex equipment purchases shall include at least the minimum level training package to allow further in house training going forward as part of the sale to ensure staff are properly trained in their use.
Emergency Procedures
- Emergency stop buttons or switches must be clearly identified and accessible at all times.
- Voice command stop and remote switch off on employee smart devices should be used wherever possible to allow for safe switching off during an emergency at a distance from the instrument.
- In the event of a malfunction or emergency, users should follow the procedures outlined in our major incidents policy.
- First aid equipment must be readily available on site at all times.
