Purpose
The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safe handling, use, and disposal of chemicals and hazardous materials within Oil Analysis Laboratories. It is designed to protect the health and safety of all employees, contractors, and visitors, as well as to prevent environmental contamination.
Scope
This policy applies to all activities involving chemicals and hazardous materials within Oil Analysis Laboratories, including the storage, use, transportation, and disposal of these substances.
Responsibilities
All employees, contractors, and visitors are responsible for adhering to this policy. Managers and supervisors are additionally responsible for ensuring the policy is implemented and followed within their areas of control.
Safe Handling and Use of Chemicals
- All chemicals must be used in accordance with their Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). Employees must read and understand the MSDS before using any new chemical to them.
- Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as gloves, goggles, and lab clothing, must be used when handling chemicals. The type of PPE required will depend on the nature of the chemical and the type of work being performed.
- Chemicals must only be used in designated areas with appropriate ventilation.
- Eating, drinking, and smoking are prohibited in areas where chemicals are used or stored.
Storage of Chemicals
- Chemicals must be stored according to their compatibility groups to prevent dangerous reactions. The MSDS will provide information on compatibility.
- Long term Chemical storage areas must be away from sources of heat and direct sunlight.
- Chemical containers must be sealed when not in use and properly labeled with the name of the chemical in use.
Disposal of Chemicals and Hazardous Waste
- All chemical waste must be disposed of in accordance with local regulations and the chemical’s MSDS. This includes oils, solvents, and other by-products of laboratory analysis.
- Hazardous waste must be stored in designated containers until it can be disposed of properly.
Training
- All employees who handle chemicals will receive training on this policy, the use of PPE, the reading and interpretation of SDSs, and emergency procedures.
- Refresher training will be provided annually or whenever significant changes are made to this policy.
Emergency Procedures
- Procedures for dealing with chemical spills, exposures, and fires are detailed in our major incidents policy. All employees who handle chemicals must be familiar with these procedures.
- Spill kits and first aid equipment must be readily available on site.
